After surgery, patients are taken to the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), otherwise known as the recovery room. There, patients are monitored closely as their anesthesia wears off. During this time, nursing caregivers check and monitor heart rhythm, blood pressure, temperature, pulse and breathing.
