THE OPPORTUNITY - CONTEXT OF THE MISSIONS

Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are third-party verified documents used to communicate the environmental performance of construction products. In the past ten years, the sector underwent exponential growth, and this is expected to accelerate with the progressive entry into force of Construction Products Regulation for different products. This will gradually make the construction products’ environmental reporting mandatory in Europe, increasing its strategic importance for companies.
EPDs, however, contain inhomogeneous and/or inaccurate data. As an example, different program operators may require a different number of fields in their PDFs or digital data. For this reason, the LCA/EPD Team of Holcim Innovation Center launched an internal project to analyse EPDs, improve their data quality and facilitate their downstream use. A platform that allows the monitoring of European EPDs was successfully created.
