SPANL was founded in September of 1987 by Margaret Acreman. Based on her own experience as a single parent, she recognized the gaps in available services and little awareness of the issues facing single parent families. Today, the Single Parent Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (SPANL) is a dynamic, non-profit organization dedicated to empowering single parents on their journey to overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Through a comprehensive range of programs and services—including counseling, education, childcare, emergency assistance, and community supports—SPANL fosters self-sufficiency and resilience in families across the province. SPANL creates a strong sense of belonging through social initiatives, peer support, and volunteer engagement.
